Crabbing Days of an Islander is filled with practical aspects of life that may be missing in the lives of most children today. Betty describes how her daily activities often contributed to providing sustenance for the family dinner table. She has added some great recipes for preparing the fresh seafood that was abundant in those days. I am anxious to revisit some of my own childhood memories by visiting the shore again, using Betty’s fishing, shrimp netting, and crabbing techniques again, and preparing the catch of the day using her recipes. Working with Betty to publish her book, I not only gained a intelligent, caring, and strong woman as a friend, but her words and pictures gave me a wonderful view of St. Simons Island during the magical time of her childhood, taking me to a simpler time, and touching the child inside me.
